Artist's Statement
My photographs are pieces of an unfolding biography. They take form as fictional moments from a story that doesn't begin or end. They are curiosity, daydreams, humor and frustration. They're compulsive.
As a mostly self-taught artist, experimentation and invention are essential to my process. I enjoy the hands-on experience of creating and the strategy involved in realizing an idea into reality. I begin my process by drafting a sketch of the idea then build the installation in my studio, manipulating natural light to carve out the space. I photograph the image with a medium format film camera and develop the film in my bathroom. Printing my work has varied from traditional darkroom, to giclee, to experimental processes.
I am inspired by the psychological inner landscape as it responds to societies prejudices and rigid expectations; often focusing on challenges specific to being raised or perceived female as well as wider observations involving gender. It's my desire to bring awareness to difficult topics with kindness hope. I'd like to offer this part of myself not only to increase understanding, but also that it might awaken or inspire something that is entirely yours. I share my work to honor connectivity of the human experience as well as the unseen becoming seen.
